CDSA Monthly Update: December 2024

Welcome to your CDSA e-update - where we share news and updates about Compute and Data Services Alliance (CDSA) initiatives, services, tools, and enhancements.

The Duke Compute Cluster for PhD students launched on November 25th! DCC is a general-purpose high performance/high-throughput installation, and it is fitted with software used for a broad array of research projects. Duke PhD students now receive an annual no-cost allocation to computing and data storage resources on the DCC. To date, 40 students have claimed their free allocations. These available resources are designed to allow researchers to process data sets too large for an average computer. PhD students can request their free allocation here and can register to attend an info session here. These 1-hour information sessions will provide PhD students with a brief overview of the DCC and the basic tasks required to login, transfer files, and use basic computing services (Jupyter, RStudio, Matlab) on the DCC.

The Duke Data Attic is in the pilot stage. This will be a low-cost storage system for non-sensitive research data. The Data Attic will provide un-curated, flexible place to store and share infrequently used data or data that may be reused. Free entitlements will be provided for faculty and doctoral students with affordable options to add storage. If you are interested in being a pilot user, contact rescomputing@duke.edu.

Stay tuned for more information as the CDSA works to streamline processes, enhance technologies, and add personnel to better support your research needs.
