Where Thoughts Gather to be Social
Based on a meta-analysis of more than 4,000 brain-scanning studies, neuroscientists R. McKell Carter and Scott Huettel are proposing a new model for the function of the temporal-parietal junction of the brain. "Wide-ranging functions thought to be supported within the TPJ actually surround the TPJ (outlined area at center), converging there to provide novel information; a social context for decision making. This social context is similar to having an understanding, or theory, of another person’s mental state (‘theory of mind’, white broken line)." Their analysis appears in the July 2013 issue of Trends in Cognitive Neuroscience.
