Purpose
The Provost Research Support Program is a co-investment initiative designed to support research continuity, foster innovation, and strengthen competitiveness in the face of a shifting funding landscape. These programs cannot fully replace federal funding for Duke University researchers; however, they may help bridge research-intensive faculty who have limited access to other sources of financial support to new areas of inquiry or help them keep essential personnel while awaiting federal funding during delays in award notification from federal agencies.
The Provost Research Support Program will offer two tracks, each with three funding opportunities:
- In the first track, the funding opportunities will be geared toward investigators seeking support for Duke- or domestic-based activities. These opportunities will be open to faculty with a primary appointment in a school, center or institute based outside of the School of Medicine.
- In the second track, the funding opportunities will allow investigators to direct support to international collaborators, whose contributions to the project are critical to sustained progress and do not have another means of support. These will be open to all Duke University regular rank faculty.
Funds for these programs will be provided by the Office of the Provost (75%) and the applicant's unit (school or college, institute or center in which the faculty has a primary appointment) (25%). Faculty will be required to provide a letter of support, detailing the unit's commitment to the 25% funding and the source of the funds, for each application.
The program has been developed to complement the DST SPARK program that provides an opportunity for full-time Duke University tenure-track faculty to submit proposals demonstrating creativity and novel research and scholarship, while enabling the Principal Investigator to pursue new directions and ideas for their research as well as the School of Medicine Expanded Bridge Funding programs and the New Direction and Delayed Funding program.
Details on the Provost Research Support Program opportunities are below - individuals are encouraged to review the specific eligibility and application requirements for each program and work with your department and grants manager to determine which funding mechanism is appropriate for your situation.
Please contact vpri@duke.edu if you have any questions about submitting an application.
categories of support
The program includes two tracks, each with three categories of support:
opportunities designed for duke- or domestic-specific activities:
Backstop of allowable costs on a federal award incurred during delays of receipt of an expected notice regarding an existing federal award ( e.g., non-competing renewals or no-cost extensions that are delayed).
For additional information and instructions on how to apply, see: Delayed Continuation Awards
For researchers awaiting federal funding decisions (e.g. competing renewals or a new award that replaces an existing award) with strong likelihood of success.
For additional information and instructions on how to apply, see: Bridge Funding
For faculty refocusing research after federal funding priority shifts.
For additional information and instructions on how to apply, see: Research Program Pivot Awards
opportunities allowing for international collaborator support:
