Quarterly Update: Reducing Administrative Barriers to Community-Engaged Research at Duke
WORKING GROUP UPDATES
The Reducing Administrative Barriers to Community Engaged Research at Duke Initiative prioritized issues, and formed targeted working groups focused on:
- IRB Training
- Updating process and policy to: 1) increase clarity of when community partners are engaged in research, potentially reducing the need for inclusion on protocols; and 2) implement training modules appropriate for community members
- Logistics (transportation, childcare, parking)
- Finalizing guidance documentation on 1) transportation options available for community engaged research; 2) allowable childcare expenses and associated processes; 3) community-focused information on Duke Parking options
- Compensation to agencies and individuals
- Meeting with administrative partners in March for input on documents outlining process
- Language Barriers
- Combined efforts with the DOCR Inclusivity Working Group, and are currently focused on seeking feedback on existing translation policies
COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT
Webpage: We have a new webpage so you can more easily track the initiative's progress
New way to hear about issues: We've developed an intake form so we can learn about issues the community is having with research partnerships. Please share!
Community Outreach: The initiative will have a presence at the Duke Center for Community Engagement Launch Event on February 5th. The event is open to all Duke and area community members.
If you have administrative complications related to community engaged research, questions about the CER initiative, or would like to get involved, please contact us. The team is interested in addressing and deeply understanding the hurdles our community members, and our researchers and scholars, experience when forging these important relationships.
Reducing Administrative Barriers to Community-Engaged Research
Priorities for Spring 2025
- Finalize documentation on compensating community partners and increase access for those materials
- Investigate options for cost-effective transportation to and from campus
- Grow the reach of communications on the initiative's progress
Community Engaged Research Definition is Now Available on the OnCore Annotations Tab
The Duke Office for Clinical Research (DOCR) December newsletter provided the update that the definition of Community Engaged Research has been added under the CRU Tracking section of the Annotations Tab in OnCore.
By using the Community Engaged Research tagging in OnCore, it will be possible to identify the teams involved in community-engaged research, assess progress in decreasing start-up timelines, and evaluate the impact of the research on advancing population health and health equity.
