Molecular Tornado

The colored dots and swirls of "dust" in this tornado-shaped diagram represent thousands of chemical compounds grouped by their physical and chemical similarities in a new technique called "materials cartography," by Stefano Curtarolo, a professor of material sciences and physics and PhD student Corey Oses. In this map, compounds are larger and more complex as they move up the vertical axis, and their electrical properties are more diverse the further from the center they lay. The Center for Materials Genomics hopes this effort to map compounds leads to new materials and new technologies. They're grouping known compounds with desirable properties to guide a search for theoretical materials with the same features.
