Modeling Brain Tumor Responses

Biomedical engineering professor Amanda Randles has co-developed a massively parallel computer model of individual cells to study different radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment schedules for glioblastoma brain tumors. The simulation captures how the cells evolve over time and respond to different treatments: tumor cells are green, stem cells are blue, and endothelial cells are red. Images on the left are 3 days after treatment; on the right one week after treatment. The model predicted that chemotherapy may be optimally administered one hour before radiation. Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center then confirmed that this schedule increased survival in mice.
