A FOREST OF LONG photoreceptor cells make up the light-gathering layer of the human retina. This confocal microscope image shows the cross-section of a retina, stained using antibodies. The light sensing structure of the photoreceptors appears bright green, explains cell biology senior research associate Krishnakumar Kizhatil in the lab of Vann Bennett. The nuclei of the photoreceptors are marked by the blue dots in the middle part of the retina. Blue dots at the bottom layer of the retina represent the nuclei of ganglion cells that are the conduit for visual information between the retina and the brain. (More on Duke Cell Biology)
