Nicolas Cassar on North Pole

True Colors

Nicolas Cassar, an assistant professor in the Nicholas School of the Environment, showed his true colors while standing on sea ice over the North Pole in late August. Cassar studies how carbon moves in the environment, from ocean to atmosphere, to plant and animal life, to better understand global climate changes brought on by increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. He visited the pole aboard the German icebreaking research vessel Polarstern as part of a 9-week expedition called  "TransArc" which is circling the pole to survey the Arctic Ocean's physical, chemical and biological changes.
